Applications

Short Oil: Require baking for a solid film, used in high-performance coatings, automotive finishes, industrial primers, and stoving enamels.

Properties: Hard, fast-drying, and high-gloss, though less flexible.

Medium Oil: General-purpose industrial coatings, architectural paints, and finishes for interior and exterior surfaces.

Properties: A balance of hardness and flexibility, good flow, and moderate drying times.

Long Oil: Air-drying decorative paints, varnishes, and exterior coatings.

Properties: Highly flexible, slow-drying, and excellent for brushing and finishing.

Alkyd Resin

Alkyd resins are classified by oil length, impacting their properties and applications: Long-oil alkyds (over 55% oil) offer flexibility, slow drying, and are used in air-drying paints and varnishes; medium-oil alkyds (45-55% oil) provide a balance of properties for general industrial and architectural coatings; and short-oil alkyds (under 45% oil) are harder, dry faster, and are ideal for high-performance, often baked, coatings like those in automotive and industrial applications.
